Today is my special day, but no one wants to wish a deformed dog like me a happy birthday, I’m so sad

Pim, a gentle soul with a heart full of love, woke with a flicker of anticipation. Today was his birthday. He didn’t quite understand what a birthday was, but he sensed it was supposed to be special. He remembered, vaguely, times when he’d been a younger pup, and there had been extra fuss, extra treats.

But as the day wore on, the anticipation faded, replaced by a heavy sadness. He sat quietly in his small corner of the shelter, watching other dogs receive attention from visitors. No one stopped at his kennel. No one offered a scratch behind the ears or a kind word. No one even glanced his way.

Pim was different. A birth defect had left him with a misshapen face, his snout slightly crooked and his eyes set at different angles. He had heard the whispers, the hushed comments about how “unusual” he looked. He had seen the way people quickly averted their gaze.

He thought, Maybe it’s because I’m not like the others. He looked at the other dogs, their sleek coats and symmetrical features. Then he looked at his reflection in a nearby puddle – the uneven lines of his face, the slightly drooped ear. A deep sigh escaped him. Maybe no one wants to wish a deformed dog like me a happy birthday.

The thought brought tears to his eyes, blurring his already imperfect vision. He longed for a simple acknowledgment, a sign that he was seen, that he mattered. He just wanted to feel, for one day, that he was worthy of love and celebration, just like any other dog.

Despite the sadness, a tiny spark of hope remained within Pim. He still wagged his tail tentatively whenever he heard footsteps approaching, hoping against hope that someone would see past his outward appearance and recognize the loving heart within. Pim’s story is a poignant reminder that true worth is not defined by outward appearances, but by the love and kindness that resides within.
