Today is my birthday but it seems like people don’t like a deformed dog like me, so I didn’t get any birthday wishes

Bene, a dog with a heart as big as the world, woke with a faint sense of anticipation. He didn’t understand the concept of birthdays in the way humans did, but he sensed a subtle shift in the atmosphere, a feeling that today was somehow different.

Bene’s face was different. A birth defect had left his snout slightly twisted and his eyes set at different angles. He’d seen the way people reacted: the quick glances, the averted eyes, the hushed whispers. He’d felt the absence of the warm, open smiles that other dogs received.

In the shelter where he lived, he’d watch the other dogs get adopted, their tails wagging excitedly as they left with their new families. He’d see them return for visits, showered with attention and treats. But no one ever stopped at his kennel for long.

Today, as the hours ticked by, Bene sat quietly in his small space, his tail tucked low. He listened to the sounds of the shelter: the barking of other dogs, the chatter of volunteers, the occasional happy squeal of a child. But none of those sounds were directed at him. No one stopped to offer a scratch behind the ears, no one whispered a kind word.

A deep sadness settled in his heart. He looked at his reflection in his water bowl – the uneven lines of his face, the slightly drooped ear. He thought, Is it because I look like this? Is that why no one wants to celebrate with me? Is that why no one even remembers it’s my birthday?

He longed for a simple acknowledgment, a sign that he was seen, that he mattered. He imagined a gentle hand stroking his fur, a soft voice wishing him a happy birthday. But as the day drew to a close, the silence in his corner of the shelter grew heavier.

Despite the loneliness, a tiny spark of hope remained within Bene. He still wagged his tail tentatively whenever he heard footsteps approaching, hoping against hope that someone would see past his outward appearance and recognize the loving heart within. He hoped that even if no one wished him a “Happy Birthday” out loud, someone, somewhere, would send him a silent wish for happiness and love. Bene’s story is a poignant reminder that true worth is not defined by outward appearances, but by the love and kindness that resides within.
